European Heritage Days: use digital simulation to travel back in time!

A fire seems to be crackling inside a cavity. Aurignacian men and women live here... We're back in the Ardèche over 35,000 years ago. Welcome to the Chauvet cave!

17 September 2021

This emblematic site of prehistory conceals traces of human life less famous than its cave paintings: thermal alterations, "such as rock flaking and color changes on the walls".

A project led by a team of researchers from Bordeaux and Toulouse aims to reconstruct the hearths and help archaeologists identify the functions of these tepee-shaped fires! To do this, it is mobilizing GENCI's national resources.

Understanding daily life and the layout of caves in the Paleolithic: it's also to this "time travel", to this recomposition of a distant past that the use of #supercomputers #HPC #IA contributes.
