Means of calculation

National computing and storage resources belong to GENCI. They are hosted and operated in three computing centers: CINES (France Universités), IDRIS (CNRS) and TGCC (CEA).

The three national computing centers

  • CINES

The CINES is a national Public Administrative Establishment (EPA), based in Montpellier, and placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI).

The CINES offers exceptional means to the entire scientific community in its national strategic statutory missions:

    • intensive digital computing,
    • permanent archiving of electronic data,
    • hosting national-scale computing platforms

  • IDRIS

The IDRIS (Institut du développement et des ressources en informatique scientifique), founded in November 1993, is the CNRS national center for very high-performance intensive digital computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI), serving scientific communities in public and private research.

Both a computing resource center and a center of expertise in HPC and AI, the IDRIS (www.idris.fr) is a support and research unit of the CNRS (UAR 851), reporting to the CNRS Directorate of Open Research Data (DDOR) and administratively attached to the Institute of Information Sciences and their Interactions (INS2I), but whose vocation within the CNRS is multidisciplinary. IDRIS's operating procedures are similar to those of very large scientific facilities.

  • TGCC

Located in Bruyères-le-Châtel, the TGCC is CEA's infrastructure for very-high-performance scientific computing and Bigdata.

This computing center was designed to host France's first petaflop-scale machine Curie, funded by GENCI for the Prace research infrastructure, as well as the new-generation Centre de Calcul Recherche et Technologie (CCRT). The new Joliot-Curie calculator replaced Curie in September 2018.

The TGCC will soon host the Pasqal quantum simulator acquired by France as part of the HPCQS project.

The TGCC will also be hosting site for the European Jules Verne exascale machine.

Technical support and assistance

The three national computing centers provide users with the skills of their technical teams to help them successfully complete their projects.

This support can take many forms and involves several levels: hotline, advanced technical support, help with code, and training, in particular.

They also offer a software library.
